The Classics Department at the U of A provided a deep and well-rounded education in Classics. The faculty were such excellent teachers and superb human beings that they provided models for me when I began my own teaching career. They were very demanding in terms of grammatical knowledge of Greek and Latin. The rigor was extremely important for my success in graduate school. They also made sure that we understood the civilization and literature of Greece and Rome. Finally, they introduced us to the world of scholarship, and that, too, was invaluable.
