Dr. Eleni Hasaki delivered the 2013 C. Densmore Curtis Distinguished
Lecture at Bryn Mawr College on April 12. Her lecture was entitled "From
Mistakes to Masterpieces: Craft Apprenticeship in Classical Antiquity,"
and she led a graduate seminar focused on the transmission of craft
knowledge in ancient Mediterranean crafts.
The C. Densmore Curtis Distinguished Lecture is an annual event
established in 1977 so that the graduate students of the Department of
Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology could invite a prominent scholar
to Bryn Mawr College to deliver a public talk and then lead a seminar for
the graduate students. C. Densmore Curtis was an archaeologist with an
interest in a wide range of ancient cultures. He received his BA from
Pomona College, his MA from the University of Colorado, and his Ph.D.
from Columbia University in 1908. He was a member of the American
Expedition for the Excavation of Cyrene, Tripoli, and a Fellow, Lecturer,
and Professor of Archaeology at the American Academy in Rome as well
as Editor of the Academy Publications.
