Congratulations to the 2022 Arizona in Orvieto Award Winners for Classics Majors:  Nastassja L. Barnes and Halle Kirk-Tiefenthaler.

The award winners are featured below with excerpts of why they personally want to study abroad.

Nastassja L Barnes: "I am currently majoring in Linguistics and Classics and minoring in Anthropology. This summer I will be studying abroad with the Arizona in Orvieto program. The reason why I wanted to study abroad with the Arizona in Orvieto program is to be able to expand my knowledge of the classical world. I would be able to study the history of the location I am traveling to. Classics interest me as a major because of the languages and literature. Both have heavily influenced European languages and storytelling, and it is interesting to see how they have also changed over time to fit our modern society."

Halle Kirk-Tiefenthaler:  "I am currently a sophomore here at the University of Arizona double majoring in Physiology and Medical Sciences and Classics with a minor in History. For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to go to Italy. The art and architecture, the beautiful views, its rich history, and of course the food and wine, all draw me to explore Italy. Interestingly enough, my fascination with Italy brought me to selecting Classics as my second major! One of the main reasons why I want to study abroad is to see firsthand what I am studying, and to gain a deeper understanding of the Classical world.  While studying abroad through the Arizona in Orvieto program I will be taking CLAS 222: Classics Through the Ages and CLAS 335: The Roman Empire: Rulers and Ruled.  Learning about Roman Society in the place it actually occurred, is an amazing opportunity that I am sure will change my perspective on the Classical world."
