2021 Greek Awards for Undergraduates

Application Deadline Extended to April 21st!

 

In Spring 2021, the department will be offering a variety of monetary awards for undergraduate students of classical Greek. These are in addition to the annual Thomas D. Worthen Prize. Details and application instructions are below. The number of awards and award amounts will be determined by the number of successful applications.

 

First-Year Greek Award

The award is designated for undergraduates completing GRK 102 who have enrolled in GRK 201 in the Fall 2021 semester. Priority will be given to declared majors in Classics and declared minors in Ancient Greek.

 

Second-Year Greek Award

The award is designated for undergraduates completing GRK 202. Priority will be given to declared majors in Classics and declared minors in Ancient Greek.

 

Greek Ambassador Award

Awarded to an undergraduate pursuing advanced ancient Greek studies to serve as a spokesperson for studying ancient Greek during the 2021-2022 academic year. Responsibilities will include speaking to undergraduates enrolled in Classics courses about the benefits of studying Greek, organizing at least one event for undergraduates interested in ancient Greek (which can be done in conjunction with Eta Sigma Phi and/or the COH Ambassadors program).

 

TO APPLY FOR THIS FUNDING, PLEASE SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING TO MARCELA THOMPSON AT marcelathompson@arizona.edu BY April 21, 2021:

  1. Your University of Arizona transcript. It is fine to send an unofficial transcript.
  2. A brief letter of application (1-2 pages). Please discuss what you find interesting about studying classical Greek and/or why you chose to study classical Greek; any tips and recommendations you have for future students regarding how to succeed when studying classical Greek; and how you think other students can be encouraged to pursue the study of classical Greek. At the top of your statement, please include the following:
  • The name of the Greek Award(s) for which you are applying (as shown above)
  • your name
  • your university email address
  • your major(s) and minor(s)
  • your expected graduation date
  • the courses in Greek you will have completed by the end of spring 2021, and any GRK courses you plan to take in the summer or fall of 2021.
