The Ethics of Deep-Fake Bodies From Greek Myth To Modern Culture
Join us for a Talk by Dr. Sarah Cullinan Herring, an Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Kansas.
What does Greek myth have to do with AI Deep Fakes? Surprisingly, quite a lot.
This talk traces the mythic precedents for AI deep fake pornography – the practice of using technology to create fabricated images of a real person, often without their consent or knowledge. Drawing on examples of artificial female bodies from Greek tragedy, lyric and prose, I explore how these elite male-authored texts anticipated the ethical dilemmas we are facing in society today as the law struggles to keep up with technological advancements in AI. This talk exposes just how deeply such fantasies of control over women’s bodies, sexualities and consent are embedded in Western culture.
CW: This paper will briefly discuss sexual violence, consent, AI deep fake pornography and the harms caused to victims.
