Assistant Professor
Dr. Max Strassfeld specializes in Judaism in Late Antiquity. Their research primarily concerns gender, sexuality, and embodiment in rabbinic legal sources. The focus of their current book project treats rabbinic ideas about eunuchs and androgynes. Their book argues that the rabbis use gender variance to explore the ungovernable qualities of bodies that can change through time. At the University of Arizona, Dr. Strassfeld teaches courses on Judaism, Jewish-Christian relations, Late Antiquity, and gender in religion. Their doctoral degree is in Religious Studies from Stanford University.
