Department of Classics Endowed Prizes

Norman Austin Outstanding M.A. Thesis Award

An annual cash award for the best M.A. thesis in the Department of Classics (by faculty nomination).

Jim Doidge Graduate Student Greek Award

An annual cash award for outstanding work by a Classics graduate student in Greek courses (by faculty nomination).

Jim Doidge Graduate Student Latin Award

An annual cash award for outstanding work by a Classics graduate student in Latin courses (by faculty nomination).

Sandra Rhead Jones Graduate Student Latin Teaching Award

An annual cash award to support the Latin teaching pursuits of a graduate student in the Department of Classics (by faculty nomination).


Other Awards

Cynthia White Travel and Study in Italy Award

The Cynthia White Travel and Study in Italy Award will be given each year to a student pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree in the Department of Classics at the University of Arizona. Awards shall be made to students participating in academic travel in Italy and/or study abroad programs in Italy. For more information, contact Professor White at ckwhite@email.arizona.edu.

American Philological Association Outstanding Student Awards

Certificates awarded to two outstanding graduate students annually (by faculty nomination).

Classical Association of the Middle West and South Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Classical Studies Award

Certificates awarded to two outstanding graduate students annually (by faculty nomination).

CAMWS Awards (Grad students must be members to apply)

  • Semple Award for summer program at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens ($2500.00)
  • Grant Award for summer program at the American Academy in Rome ($2500.00)
  • Benario Award for a summer travel program of his or her choice ($1500.00)

ACL Awards (for members of ACL who are working toward Certification in Latin)

  • Maureen V. O'Donnell Scholarship ($500.00)
  • Ed Phinney Memorial Scholarship ($500.00)

Eta Sigma Phi Summer Scholarships (Caroline Perkins)

  • Brent Malcolm Froberg Scholarship to attend the Summer Session of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens ($3400.00)
  • Scholarship to attend the Summer Session of the American Academy in Rome ($2800.00)

Eligibility: ETA SIGMA PHI members and alumni who have received a BA in a since January 1, 1993 or will have received it in or before June 1999, and who have not received a doctoral degree.

CAMWS Awards for Elementary and Secondary Teachers & High School Students (Library/Teacher must be a member of CAMWS to apply)

  • School Awards Latin Translation Contest ($250.00 and many other prizes)
  • Good Teacher Award ($300.00)
  • Manson Stewart Scholarships for teaching certification or to attend a CAMWS meeting

Scholarships at the American Academy in Rome

  • American Academy in Rome Classical Summer School for high school teachers and graduate students of Latin, Ancient History and the Classics.
  • American Academy in Rome Summer Program in Archaeology

Fellowships at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens

  • Academic year scholarships available for graduate students and postdoctoral students.
